Andy Murray to join Team Djokovic as a coach

Andy Murray’s time away from Tennis lasted only 4 months, but this time he will be in the coaches box.

When I saw this notification, I couldn’t quite believe it. I needed some extra validity.

I would never have thought that long time rivals would join forces, especially in this fashion. Andy Murray retired 4 months ago after Wimbledon, and a big factor in his retirement had to do with his family. He wanted to spend more time around his wife and four children. But we all know how much of a competitor Andy Murray is. At his farewell ceremony at Wimbledon over the summer, he was asked whether he’d return to watch matches in the stands and replied: “I would probably be more comfortable up there in the coaching box.”

Andy Murray, one of the best competitors in the sport, definitely missed the action. I suspect he missed the feeling of winning and the daily grind it takes to win at the highest level. But I was more surprised by the news because Andy had mentioned he was going to take a stab at an acting career. So, it’s unclear how long the collaboration between Djokovic and Murray will last, but Andy will hardly be able to travel for many weeks during the year. That’s because of his theatrical tour and his family, which is why he does not seem willing to be a full-time coach.

For Novak, he is trying to find a new spark in the last stage of his legendary career. The Serbian  just experienced the least decorated season of his career, in which he did not win a single title. He was losing to players he wasn’t supposed to, as well as dealing with injuries that prolonged over tournaments and surfaces. The former world number 1 saved his 2024 thanks to the surprising victory at the Paris Olympics, where he won that gold medal he had been chasing for many years. It meant the world to him. Not only did it mean the world, but he showed that he can still compete at the top of the sport as he defeated Carlos Alcaraz in two tiebreaks on the Roland Garros Clay.

It is no mystery that this partnership has generated comments in every corner of the world. The 3-time Grand Slam champion has never been a coach and has no experience, but he knows Novak very well and knows how to interpret the dynamics of modern tennis. Andy Murray was one of the best players tactically, so he can help Novak with a different view and different perspectives.

Finally, I think this news puts everyone on notice. It sends a message to the rest of the tour that Novak is still here to compete at the highest level. More specifically, he’s prepared to do damage at the Australian Open, the major where he’s had the most success (10 Titles). Andy and Novak have just under two months to prepare, and I’m excited to see what sort of hype videos they will drop.

Until next time…

-Simon
