Iga Swiatek vs. Elena Rybakina, a Quarterfinal clash down under!

Ahead of the 2026 season, I said that Rybakina would finish the year at number 4 in the WTA rankings. The main reason I had her this high was because I felt that she could win a slam in 2026. My hunch was that it would be Wimbledon, but I quickly followed that up by saying, “I wouldn’t be surprised if it’s Australia, though” because of her form to finish the 2025 season and how the conditions in Melbourne suit her game. Heres a quick preview of the matchup underneath the video.

Rybakina has now reached the quarterfinals without dropping a set, but the road ahead runs through the WTA’s elite. Starting with Swiatek, then potentially Anisimova or Pegula, and finally Sabalenka or Svitolina. Here’s a quick snapshot:

Elena Rybakina and Iga Swiatek share one of the tour’s most compelling rivalries. Rybakina held a 4-1 edge in the head-to-head entering 2025, but Swiatek has since flipped the script, now leading 6-5 overall. The pair have split their two most recent encounters. Rybakina claimed their 2023 Round-of-16 meeting in Australia, while Swiatek responded with a three-set win in the same round at the 2025 French Open. Notably, Swiatek owns a 5-3 advantage over Rybakina on hard courts.

Rybakina has been outstanding in Melbourne, cruising through four matches without dropping a set. Going back to the fall of 2025, she may be the hottest player on tour right now. Swiatek has also opened the season in excellent form, and this feels like a matchup worthy of a championship match. The margins are going to be super tight, so the serving ability of Rybakina might give her a slight edge.

On the flip side, any lingering problems with Swiatek’s serve will be costly against Rybakina, who will look to go big on return, essentially starting the point on her terms. Without a clear improvement in her first-serve numbers, Swiatek may put too much pressure on herself to withstand a baseline battle.

There’s rarely much separating these two, though Rybakina has looked slightly stronger throughout her campaign. Swiatek’s level has also been high, while the faster conditions play into Rybakina’s weapons, something she demonstrated by knocking Swiatek out here in 2023. Known for rising to big moments, Swiatek will be tested again, but Rybakina may benefit from carrying less pressure and playing with greater clarity.
